Setting up Weather Display and Weather Display Live

First download Weather Display and Weather Display Live. Install both programs. It is also worth downloading and printing out the configuration document. This contains useful information for customising your displays.

Setting up Weather Display and Weather Display Live. The three steps to heaven.

Step 1. Create a new folder, anywhere will do. From the WDL installed folder copy wdlconfig.xml, wdlv6_09.swf, wdlv6_09.exe and the four clientrawxxxx.txt files into the new folder. In this folder run wdlv6_09.exe. You should see your display. NB the configuration document refers to wdlv6_05, an older version. The version you download may be newer than 6_09.

In the WDL installed folder there is a sub folder ‘upload’. Edit the index.html file in notepad. About halfway down there is a line starting ‘ var pathToWdlconfig’ change the text to the URL of your website. E.G. if your website is ‘www.froglegs.co.uk’ this line should read ‘var pathToWdlconfig = "http://www.froglegs.co.uk/wdlconfig.xml"’ if your website is ‘http://something else.org’ the the line will read ‘…= “http://somethingelse.org/wdlconfig.xml”’.

The example in the configuration manual has slightly different syntax. You must get this right or it will not work. At the same time you can if you wish open clientraw.txt in an editor and change ‘Highwoods’ to the town of your choice. If  your  town has spaces, the spaces must be replaced by underscores. E.G. Biggin_Hill will display as Biggin Hill.

You can now upload all the files in the ‘upload’ folder to your website. I use Filezilla, a totally free open source FTP client but whatever program you’re happy with. Check that your website displays the content correctly.

Step 2. Connect your weather station to the computer. Run weather Display. The WD control panel is a nightmare of setup options. You first need to determine which PC port your weather station uses. In control panel (PC), system, device manager, ports (this route depends on which flavour of windows you have) you should see your weather station connection. You can check by disconnecting and reconnecting. The simplest way is to use the setup wizard until you find your way around the control panel(WD). The first option is the units data will display. Next is the com port which you have previously found. If the weather station is a true USB device as opposed to one that emulates a comport, then you don’t enter a comport number. Next is weather station type. There is a drop down box top left to help with this. Click close/save not the cross. Next page is your station coordinates. Enter latitude numbers and click ‘set lat’ button. Enter longitude number, tick box if east of 0 deg and click the ‘set long’ box. Click OK. Next box set colours, you can accept the defaults for now if you wish. You can accept defaults for the remaining settings. WD should now load up your weather station data and display it.

Step 3. Configuring the upload to WDL.

On Weather Display menu select ‘control panel’.

In the control panel select ‘web files/web page real time FTP/WDL.

Open the tab ‘Real time client FTP/AJAX/Weather Display Live setup.

In ‘your weather station name’ enter your weather station’s name. I use an underscore instead of spaces.

Tick the box ‘Rename the file as a temporary………’.

In ‘Restart/reset interval’ set your upload frequency.

In the panel bottom left tick the box ‘Use this FTP settings…..’.

Enter the parameters to upload data to your website.

Top right, click the masterswitch on (green)  click start, if you don’t nothing will happen until you do, a sneaky little setting this.

Click OK.

Both programs should now be set up and your website should receive live data.
